Playa Maderas (also known as Playa Madera, Playones or Punta Quilla) is a great surfing beach for beginners. It has a consistent, sandy bottomed beach break with swells both north and south. It has occasional barrel sections but on most days is a fun, fast and easy ride of 100-150 meters. Because it is a good location for beginners, it is best to rise early and beat the crowds. Both mid-incoming and mid-outgoing tides are best so check the charts and have a great time!

There are several surf shops in San Juan del Sur as well as board rentals and ding repair. Although some of the best waves are at Playa Maderas, there is a shuttle in town which will take you to several other surrounding beaches.
